Cathy D’Apice Memorial Volleyball Tournament

The 15th annual Cathy D’Apice Memorial Volleyball Tournament was held on Sunday, April 10th at Conard H.S. in West Hartford, CT.

The level of volleyball played this year was outstanding with a mix of collegiate Div. I, II, and III teams participating along with several women’s adult teams. While the competition is excellent, even more important is the time set aside in the day to pay tribute to Cathy and to honor her memory, celebrate her life, and to educate all in attendance about the disease and what progress is being made in the fight against breast cancer.

Cathy D’Apice passed away 20 years ago at the age of 30 and Val Dickinson, her teammate passed away in 2008; she would have turned 50 last week.  The tournament includes Cathy and Val’s “Fossils” teammates who play to honor their memory and raise awareness for the cause.

We have raised over $78,500 for breast cancer research over the years.  We ask teams to contribute a minimum of $400 and individuals to raise  at least $50 apiece. Donations are tax deductible and checks should be made out to CTBHI (CT Breast Health Initiative).

This year’s tournament was a day to remember and we did something special in Cathy’s memory. It was one of those rare days when players call their own touches even in the heat of battle!
