NEW BRITAIN — Pink is pretty, pink is feminine, pink is … baseball?

New Britain Stadium turned an unusual hue Sunday for the Pink in the Park day to advance the Race in the Park next Saturday.

The Rock Cats themselves carried on their now annual tradition of wearing pink jerseys in acknowledgement of breast health for their 1:35 p.m. game against the Harrisburg Senators.

When the Rock Cats first started Pink in the Park, there was some concern about getting players to wear pink uniforms, club president Bill Dowling said. Those fears were dispelled as soon as the idea was taken to the players.

”There were tears in the eyes of a couple of the players,” Dowling said, players who had had family members grapple with breast cancer and were willing to do whatever it takes to combat the disease.

According to Rock Cats director of community relations Amy Helbling, Pink in the Park was sponsored by Healthmart in partnership with the Connecticut Breast Health Initiative based out of New Britain.

“We have partnered with the Rock Cats over several years,” said Joyce Bray, president of the Breast Health Initiative.

Breast cancer survivors were paired with Rock Cats players and given the chance to throw out a pitch in a pregame ceremony on the field at 1 p.m.

“It’s just a really very celebratory day,” Bray said. “We look forward to it every year.”

The Initiative is running the Race in the Park day Saturday, May 7, its principal fundraiser. The proceeds from Race in the Park will go towards breast cancer research.

“The initiative is wonderful,” Dowling said. “They’re so caring.”

Stadium employee Brenda Plourde will be spending race day walking with Team Palmese, organized by Emily Palmese in honor of her grandmother, a cancer survivor.

“We look forward to Pink in the Park” at the stadium, Plourde said. “It’s just so colorful.”

Plourde’s daughter Danielle Lamont will also be walking with her own team of middle school girls called Strive, part of the YWCA team. “They’re super excited about that,” Lamont said, having raised nearly $200 for the event.

NEW BRITAIN — Volunteers, supporters and survivors packed the rooftop deck of the East Side Restaurant during Friday’s kickoff reception for the Race in the Park. As accordion music filled the air, they dined on German food and washed it down with large mugs of German beer.

The food was free, but all proceeds from the drinks went to the CT Breast Health Initiative, the organization responsible for the race.

Boot-shaped shot glasses, beer mugs and large glass beer boots were also on sale for $10, $20 and $30, respectively. Once purchased they were good for one free fill-up and a dinner coupon, with those proceeds also benefitting the initiative.

Owner Nick Augustino addressed the crowd with his loud cheer of, “Ticki tocki, ticki tocki, hoy, hoy, hoy!” The jovial Augustino then thanked those in attendance and reminded all that, “They’re going to have a race up there (in the park) and I’m going to bring pancakes.”

Augustino then praised Joyce Bray, president of the initiative, who was in attendance. “I’ve gone with Race in the Park for a lot of reasons, but a big one was Joyce.”

Volunteer Deanie Radda has been working with the initiative since 2004. In 1991, Radda was diagnosed with breast cancer. The 20-year survivor, who went through radiation and chemotherapy treatment, hopes a cure will one day be found, but also sees the benefits of fundraising in helping find new and more effective treatments.

“Our goal is to find a cure, our mission is to make a difference and we want to do it locally, all of our money stays in Connecticut,” Radda said.
