Prior to the 2011 Race in the Park, MaryEllen Farrell, a teacher at the Lincoln School in New Britain, encouraged students at the school to participate in the Race. Their participation was part of their experience with the 4-H Club, where their preparation was to complete a total of 13.1 miles of training (a half marathon).

Lincoln School Students Participating in the CTBHI Race in the Park

MaryEllen writes: I hope that you all are enjoying your summer. I just wanted to share a story written by one of the Lincoln School participants. He really enjoyed it and I hope it will inspire you, as it did me, to continue your important work with CTBHI. I recently submitted it to the Hartford Courant iTowns section with his picture.

As a side note, Bekkie Wright, an accomplished runner with the Silk City Striders, donated her many race medals so that parents could drape yet another medal around their necks at the finish line. This is the medal they earned for their ‘half marathon’. She has no idea how far that one simple act of generosity will go. I love it!

My Experience at the CTBHI RACE IN THE PARK

by

Jordan Santos, Lincoln School Student

When I woke up I felt really nervous so to assure myself that I would be ready to run I ate a healthy breakfast. I had a banana, some grapes, a kiwi and 2 apples slices. I walked the way to the park to meet Ms. Farrell and the rest of the Lincoln School runners. When I saw all of the people there I felt sick to my stomach because I have never run in a big event like this before. While I was running I didn’t feel nervous anymore because I was never alone and that made me feel better because I don’t like being left behind. Ms. Farrell told me that when her friends and she go running they don’t leave anyone behind. They motivate each other the entire way. She invited her running friends to stay the same pace as certain kids in order for them to feel like they were not alone. This made me feel a lot more confident about completing the kid’s mile and completing the 4-H Fitness Club’s half marathon challenge. When I was about one quarter of the way done with the mile I started to feel my heart racing faster than a stampede running through the jungles of Africa. At the finish line, even though I was exhausted, Ms. Farrell had me wave an American flag that the 4-H Fitness kids were given at the beginning of the race and told me to scream, “Whooo! We did it”, so I did and I look forward to racing again for breast cancer. I hope to stay fit and healthy so I don’t get cancer. I believe this has been a wonderful experience and think everybody should help out because this is worth raising money for.

This year’s top fundraiser for the “Friends Asking Friends” portion of the CT RACE in the Park was Erin Cagianello. Erin raised over $3,200 as an individual plus more than $500 in matching contributions from her company. Volunteering since the RACE’s inception, Erin decided to change things up this year by participating in the Female 5K Run in place of wearing a volunteer shirt. Erin was a member of “We Remember Kathy,” a team formed in memory of the 15th anniversary since her mother lost her battle with breast cancer in 1996. Friends, family, and coworkers were more than happy to participate in such a good cause and as Cagianello mentioned, “It was a welcome surprise to see just how much my friends’ generosity could make a difference in my fundraising efforts.” The RACE committee thanked Erin for her efforts with a beautiful display of flowers from Scott’s Flowers in New Britain along with various gift cards from local merchants.

Ruth Ann Lobo became a friend of CTBHI 18 years ago because of a killer disease.
After her initial diagnosis, and in speaking with her then , she became a reluctant spokesperson for breast cancer at first. Later, she accepted her disease with grace and passion. She learned very importantly to put a face on breast cancer when very few were speaking out. She learned to use her high profile as mother of Rebecca and became an advocate for awareness and detection. She became a believable role model for Survivors and for all women, speaking often and co-writing her book.

Since 1994, Ruth Ann attended EVERY RACE for breast cancer held in May in New Britain.

Since 2004, Ruth Ann was honorary Co-Chair of the CT BHI RACE IN THE PARK —until this year….
For 2 years her recurrence was back with a vengeance and she knew it.

We miss her desperately.
The CT Breast Health Initiative family understands the loss of the Lobo family, and is most grateful for her life, the impact she made, and the message of hope she gave to all of us.

She was “the good that comes out of the bad.”
